TERUHA -- Her First Experience with a Man, and the Ritual of "Mizuage" in OLD JAPAN

This image captures, with both delicacy and accuracy, the facial lines and trademark expression that made TERUHA one of the most sought-after Geisha of Tokyo during the last years of the Meiji-era.

Although there were thousands of Geisha, their mark of popularity was determined by how well their photographs sold to the masses. With that as a gauge, TERUHA was for many years considered either the first or second most beautuful (read: popular) Geisha in all of the SHINBASHI district.

But her days of popularity and intrigue in TOKYO came only after her training as a young MAIKO in OSAKA CITY.

The illegitimate child of a philanderer who, for a great sum of money, sold her into the Willow World of OSAKA CITY when she was 12 years old, TERUHA first debuted as a MAIKO at age 13 under the name CHIYOHA.

Within days, she was already dancing the Hinaburi before elite males who had their eyes on her, including the future Prime Minister of Japan, Kinmochi Saionji, as well as the various leaders of the Sumitomo Group.

After only a month as a young and budding Maiko, the house mama --- who had her own ideas about a ritual called ♦ mizuage, and the money that she could realize by this little girl --- allowed the Chairman of the Osaka Stock Exchange to have his way with her in a back room of the Tea House.

Teruha recalled that she felt both fear and shame as she lost her virginity to circumstances far beyond her control, further stating, "....I just learned to give up without resisting. I couldn't get angry nor feel regret. I was not what I had been any more. Unconsciously, I branded myself with an impurity that could never be washed away....."

So much for the practice of Geisha Houses in old Japan selling "virgin sex with 13 year old girls" to the highest bidder. (See the ♦ MIZUAGE comment just below).

Until age 39, when she shaved her head and entered the Buddhist Priesthood, Teruha's life was one long string of love affairs and broken marriages filled with dead-end feelings of passion for men who only wanted her as a conquest trophy, and and at least one long affair with an American women.

By the time the above photo was taken of her as a teenager, she had already entertained thoughts of suicide, and had cut off a part of her little finger to prove her love to a man --- a patron of the Geisha House who ended up spurning her anyway --- in a series of scandals that made her even more famous than her already-noted unusual expression of beauty.

♦ MIZUAGE (水揚ã'?, lit. "hoisting from water") was a ceremony undergone by a Japanese maiko (apprentice geisha) to signify her coming of age. When the older geisha training her deemed the maiko ready to come of age, the topknot of her hair was symbolically cut. Afterward, a party would be held for the maiko.

During the Edo period, courtesans undergoing mizuage were sponsored by a patron who had the right of taking their virginity. Mizuage has also historically been connected with loss of virginity of maiko, but this practice became illegal in 1959.

According to research by anthropologist Liza Dalby, mizuage was an important initiation to womanhood and the geisha world. Mizuage gave way to the next ritual often referred to as ‘turning the collar’ or ‘Erikae’: where a maiko exchanges her red collar (maiko) for a white collar (geisha). Previously to the mid twentieth century, all maiko had to go through this ceremony in order to become a full fledged geisha. Once the mizuage patron's function served (of deflowering the young maiko) he was to have no further relations with the girl. Mizuage was not considered by geisha to be an act of prostitution. The money acquired for a maiko’s mizuage was a great sum and it was used to promote her debut as a geisha.

Since 1959, mizuage has become the equivalent of a sweet sixteen party. Mineko Iwasaki, one of the geishas that Golden met while writing "Memoirs of a Geisha" described mizuage in her autobiography as being an initiation party. Mizuage was demonstrated on the to-be geisha by a change in hairstyle. It is a celebration of the passage of girl (maiko) to woman (geisha).

Picture of my old transistor radio and and an old issue of a magazine with an article on The Jackson Five dating back to the early 70s.

In the early seventies, we had no television coverage in most parts of India. There was no FM radio and the sole local affiliate of an international record company was never in any crushing hurry to release the most current albums and SP's on vinyl in view of the miniscule size of the market.
Shortwave radio was the most convenient means to access Western popular music. At the time, under the conformist pressure to grow up a little and to switch my tastes to more mature and innovative forms of musical entertainment, I began to investigate the then cutting edge rock-jazz of Chicago and to tune into programmes like "The Promenade Concerts" on BBC World Service and "Jazz Hour" on the VOA.
Then, courtesy the BBC World Service Top Twenty and the VOA "Now Sound", I heard this amazingly perfect voice hitting with magnificent precision the high notes of songs like "Got To Be There", "Rocking Robin" and "Ben". I happily regressed a good ten years in terms of musical tastes and authorised that voice to permanently inhabit whatever portion of the brain it is that retains musical memories, and as life marched on, those songs and the voice of the pre-teen Michael Jackson were relegated to being just that---"pleasant memories". At the back of my mind was this thought that child stars have their bit of success till their voices break.
But, in 1979, I and my family re-discovered the new MJ when he had those monster hits with "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop Till We Get Enough". Later, when my children discovered the truly global superstar Michael Jackson of the video era in the eighties, I realised how one individual performer had defined the memories of my own lifetime at three distinct stages spanning over more than three decades. That this was done to other countless millions across the globe regardless of race, age, sex, culture or religion just goes to prove that such talent and grasp of the popular imagination are rare and special gifts.The least we can do is acknowledge their awesome capability of connecting people all over the world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. -- And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
