How long soon after sex can i take a pregnancy test?

How long after unprotected sex does one need to wait before taking a home pregnancy test? Not how long after a missed period, but how long after intercourse? We just want to be sure the test is as accurate as possible and not a false positive or negative due to semen still being present.
Thanks for the responses. I understand how it measures the hcg level in the urine. We are trying to conceive and just want to be sure taking the test shortly after intercourse will not have any affect on the results.

The best time to take a hpt is the day of your missed period. Generally that is going to give the most accurate result. With some tests, you can test up to 5 days before your period is due, but they are not always as accurate, as the pregnancy hormone, hCG is not always high enough at that time, to register.
So it is not a matter of when you had intercourse, but when is your period actually due...Semen being present will have nothing to do with the result of a urine hpt...a positive reading will indicate that you are pregnant, have recently been pregnant, or can happen due to some fertility medications....nothing else will typically result in a postive reading as long as you are following the hpt instructions...
